Chapter 18: Sensitive discovery

Sighing heavily and frankly exhausted, Sherlock took a step back from the grand whiteboard he was granted in a nearby meeting room. He’d stuck every single piece of paper in order by victim and dates up on that darn board. He pulled up his jacket sleeve to check the time once again, now only eighteen hours remained until his deadline. This had to be a lead or he had just wasted precious time on ‘decorating’ the room.

“Sherlock,” A deep man’s voice said from behind him.

Frowning, the Detective recognized the voice and turned his entire body towards the sound of his brother, “Mycroft?” he greeted questionably, “What are you doing here? I didn’t think Scotland Yard was your scene, too much leg work.”

Amused by his brother’s sarcastic comment and attempt to irritate, Mycroft Holmes simply nodded and entered the room, closing the door behind him, “Yes, very good, now you’ve got that out of your system. John Watson informed me on your missing ‘friend’” he smiled.

Sherlock rolled his eyes and puffed out an annoyed breath as he turned back to his paper covered board, “I’m busy.”

Smiling, the elder Holmes began to slowly walk over until stopped aside his sibling, “I was only wondered if you were alright, you know how I worry.” he said, admiring the work.

“Why wouldn’t I?” the younger Holmes replied, glancing at his brother with some kind of shock at the emotional admittance.

    “Sentiment,” He simply said.

Growling to himself, Sherlock gritted his teeth momentarily before replying angrily, yet quietly, “I was ten years old. I was stupid. I have learnt.”

“So it seems. That’s why you’re spending every minute of the day on finding her. Have you even eaten anything, or is the guilt too much for one to handle?”

The more his brother spoke, the angrier the Consulting Detective seemed to get. Maybe Mycroft was just trying to somehow help, but if he was, he was doing a bad job of it. Sherlock exhaled heavily and tried to keep his voice calm, “I’m not hungry, I am not riddled with sentiment for this woman and I certainly am not feeling guilty.” He lied, rather convincingly at that.

But the elder Holmes knew his younger brother all too well to ever get him to admit it. He looked down towards the floor and nodded, “Very well. I’m here because our parents wanted me to see how you were, despite me assuring them you would be fine.”

Sherlock said nothing, just tried to block out his brother’s voice as his mind wondered whether he was actually right, whether he was doing all of this because it was you and not something that sparked his interest.

“If you need anything, you know where to find me.” Mycroft said, watching his mentally busy brother before turning away and heading towards the door where he stopped to look back, “I’ve always said caring is not an advantage, Sherlock.” He paused, watching his siblings head lift and listen, “But it is alright to be normal…”

The Consulting Detective took a rather long second to process that before his brows knitted together and he turned to look back, “You used to tease and torment me for trying to be normal.” He said, his eyes finally reaching the doorway but his brother had already gone.

Sighing, the man turned back to the whiteboard and tried to focus, time was ticking.

The day ticked on. Yawning, the Consulting Detective picked up his cup and wandered out to the main floor. He’d been staring at pictures of dead women, evidence and their killer for the past two hours, trying to find some sort of connection, yet he came up short with how this was related to Ava.

All eyes seemed to turn as Lestrade’s lifted to watch Sherlock stumble out and pour himself a large cup of coffee from the nearest machine. He guessed he was having as much luck as they were, for once.

Taking a long sip from his now filled cold coffee, the Consulting Detective turned and watched the small lecture, looking up at the many images and text projected on the wall. But then, Lestrade changed the image to one they’d kept in her file, one of the victim when she was seventeen and something sparked in his mind, a possible result.

Sherlock tilted his head as his jaw dropped the slightest, each letter of the missing victims name lighting up one by one in his mind until spelling the name he thought seemed oddly familiar.

“Wait!” Holmes said, putting his mug rapidly onto the nearest desk, spilling some of its contents. He ran off to his own little office and returning with the picture he’d ripped off the whiteboard, “Oh you are brilliant.” He said, almost excitedly until he truly thought about it, “Well, apart from being dead.”

All the police officers, including Sally and Lestrade watched the man confusingly, what on earth was he doing?

“Sherlock…” Lestrade spoke, wanting to get on with it and get back to work on finding you.

“Look.” The consulting Detective sighed, putting the image he had of Ivana Harros body aside the image of Ava, “Ivana Harros is an anagram for Ava Harrison, look, they’re identical, give or take the haircut and contacts. I knew something seemed awfully familiar. It says in your report that she ran away, and clearly she didn’t want to be found. She changed her name and appearance. It was so obvious and in plain sight that none of your saw it! You could have had this wrapped up years ago!”

But despite the small thrill of solving the easiest case ever in front of the entire metropolitan murder division, this was bad news for you. The kidnapper wanted to know about his daughter, and now, Sherlock would have to tell him and hope that this result didn’t inflict on your own life.
